The price of paradise

Paying for upgrades to much of Ruidoso's infrastructure (new fire station, wastewater treatement plant, schools, hospital, etc.) falls almost entirely on residents, except for the gross receipts tax, which is helping pay off fire station bonds. Should visitors also ante up to maintain their mountain getaway? If so, any ideas on how to put some of the burden on them? Let us know.

Speaking as a resident I believe that the tourists are already paying their fair share. Just today I saw gas at 2.66 in El Paso and 3.09 here. Restaurants are more expensive. Tourist paying inflated prices allow us to live and work here. Some of the items mentioned are a result of shortsightedness on our part. Allowing the Rio Ruidoso to become a designated "Cold Water Fishery" with all of it's stringent requirement comes to mind. Having septic systems on or near the river seems counter intutive. Having private wells drawing water for gardening on or near the river surely must affect flow. All in all I believe that there is a fair balance between what we locals pay and what the tourist pays in Ruidoso.

Am I missing something?
Most "blogs" are updated regularly. The author, Marty Racine, has not posted anything in nearly three months.
Does he take this seriously?
Should we??

I think Ruidoso (like many western US communities) has to come to the understanding that their present configuration is, in a word, unsustainable. I won't be surprised if the population drops precipitously in the next 10 years as gas gets more expensive and those weekend trips from the Texans begin to dwindle even further. No tourists, no money, no money, no town. Sorry! And that's coming from someone who grew up on Sudderth.

Oh, and as far as Marty taking this blog seriously ... I dunno. Maybe he lost the password? ;P

As a Ruidoso resident who works out of town to pay my local bills, I truly believe that the cost to locals is already too high. The folks who live here must be allowed to afford the place, after all we are the ones keeping things going between tourists and in off seasons. Without locals working and living on this mountain there won't be a village for anyone to visit, tourists come for the services we provide so we have to be here to do our jobs. And the village was living local folks long before the tourists found us out. They should enhance our ability to sustain our lifestyles not cause it to be so over the top that we can't even live in our own hometown. Pass the extra costs onto visitors and let the local workers catch our breath! Annie
